I went to the kick off of the 2012 Avalanche Tour on March 27th and had the opportunity to catch up with Rick De Jesus of Adelitas Way before the show. I have been a fan of these guys since they started out, but this was also my first time meeting with them in person. They were incredibly cool and hospitable, but to make it even better, they put on one hell of an energetic rock show. The Avalanche Tour returns for its second outing this year with Adelitas Way as direct support for Shinedown, to be joined by New Medicine and Art of dying for the first and second legs respectively.  Fans of Adelitas Way have a chance to get up close and personal with the band this year- as they’ll offer VIP packages and meet & greet opportunities along the way.

Shauna: You guys are on the second annual Avalanche Tour. Today is the kick off right?

Rick: Yes, it’s the first show on the first day and I’m excited and anxious. We’ve been off for a little bit and we are ready to get back out and do what we do.

Shauna: Have you played with Shinedown before?

Rick: Oh yeah! They kind of taught us the ropes. We played with them off our first record a couple years back when we were just coming up. They were just starting the Sound of Madness. They are great. We got offered this tour and we are happy to be playing with them again.

Shauna: Where does this tour take you?

Rick: It’s like forty dates. We are hitting everywhere.

Shauna: Are all of the dates posted or will more be added?

Rick: We are still filling in some dates in May. I think a lot of April is posted, but you want to keep playing for the fans. I want to play a show everyday, I love it!

Shauna: You have toured all over. Is there anywhere you haven’t been that you’d like to go?

Rick: Miami!! I want to go to Miami! Come on guys, book us in Miami!!

Shauna: Do you prefer the big shows or the more intimate ones?

Rick: I like them all! I like little ones, I like big ones, I like festivals and I like having a good time. That is what rock music is all about. I think a lot of these younger kids do not understand that rock is fun. Avalanche is going to create memories and we are going to put a good time on for people and people are going to keep coming back.

Shauna: What is the one thing you cannot leave home without when you go on tour?

Rick: There are so many things. You gotta have your stage clothes and your boots. If you want to talk about something quirky, I almost brought my robe out. I have this robe that I just love and I’ll wear it. I almost brought it out, but I didn’t. It wasn’t robe time! It’s going to be robe time. I love robe time!

Shauna: What do you do to pass the time on those long drives?

Rick: I like having fun. I work out, I like to play sports, I like to hang out with the other bands and I like to just enjoy the day. You can’t let it pass you by, you have to enjoy life.

Shauna: It’s been a while since I talked to you last, what are some of the highlights of the past year?

Rick: It has been a great year. We put a new record out, we had our first single go to #1 in the country, our second single hit like #2 in the country and now our third single “Criticize” is out and it is climbing the charts. So hopefully we will have another big one there. I think this record is just coming and I think people are just starting to find out about it. We are starting to make some noise. We were just in USA Today and we got the Avalanche tour. We are going to be touring non-stop this year. I think this is going to be our year.

Shauna: Will you be playing any summer festivals this year?

Rick: Oh yeah! We are going to be playing them all, Rockfest, Rocklahoma, and more. They are all the most amazing experience. I’m all about playing the festivals. I’m all about everyone having a good time and getting back to the good ole days of just fun! Where everyone is going out there listening to music and having a good time. That is what we do. Our job is to put on a fun show for people that they can remember. I think we are going to be doing a headlining run at some point this year too. Our last headlining run was successful and we want to do another one. We want to get back out and see everybody. We have a couple shows we have to make up as well. We had to cancel a couple shows because we went out with Guns N Roses. I want everyone to know that we didn’t forget them. We are going to book those shows and we are going to come back.

Shauna: You are coming up on a year since Home School Valedictorian came out. Are you guys working on new music?

Rick: Yeah we are always working on new music. We never stop. I’m a musician, it is what I do. I don’t make a record when someone says “Make a record.” We never stop writing and to be honest with you, I feel like as a songwriter I’m getting better. I don’t want to say too much because I am a very humble person, but I feel like our stuff is definitely going in the direction of better and of growing. With every record we try to surpass the last. I think we are going to go to the next level on the next record.

Shauna: How far along are you in writing the next record?

Rick: I’ve got some stuff that I’m really confident about. I think that is why I feel so good. I’m excited for people to hear it, but we have so much more left to go on Home School Valedictorian. It is a deep record.

Shauna: You have three singles off the one record. Did you only make the one video?

Rick: We shot two videos, one for “Sick” and the other for “Collapse.” I don’t know if we are going to shoot a video for “Criticize.” We are going to shoot a video for the song “Alive” as well. I think it is one of the best songs on the record. I can’t wait for everybody to hear that. We never stop working and the main goal when we come out on these tours is to work hard, meet with fans and gain new fans.

Shauna: Did any of the songs end up getting placed in TV or movies off the album?

Rick: Yeah, I mean, we have been on a lot of TV. We have been on CSI Miami, WWE and we are working on another thing with WWE. As far as movies, we have a couple songs on this record that I think could do it, you never know. I think if people could hear them they will like them, so hopefully we get in more movies and video games.

Shauna: Thanks so much for the interview. Would you like to add or say anything?

Rick: I am blessed to be doing this. I want to thank God, thank our fans and thank everybody for putting us in the position to succeed.
