This self-titled EP and additional single come from a band that mixes various sounds that seem to come from a variety of inspirations and yet come together to make a fresh and unique sound that is something very special. Think of Nirvana, Radiohead, The Beatles, Blur and some great bluesy Southern rock all rolled into one band and you have Some Velvet Morning They utilize a unique approach that almost sounds as if they have taken mono rock sounds and mixed them skillfully with full on stereo rock and added in a dash of vocal tweaks to make a unique sound that is all their own. The tweaks are much like those that Muse uses and just highlight the amazing vocals rather than alter them.
“Resistance” Is a perfect example of that mash up of all the elements they place so carefully in thought and performance into their tunes. All elements come together to give the listener a melodic and catchy song that also intrigues the listener with complex instrumentation and outstanding layered vocals. “National Valentine” moves to a more retro feel and brings out a different range of outstanding vocals and perfect musicianship of all three band members. Remarkable production and mixing make this a standout track for the excellence and uniqueness of the music. “Hollywood” leads the band in the same direction as “National Valentine” but leaves the retro in the background and just presents a haunting sound with softer contemporary rock sounds. “Peace” goes full on retro in the execution and reminds you of fifties ballads that slow dancing was designed for. The New single “How To Start A Revolution” brings out much more of the full on bluesy harder rock sound with a song that shows the bands broader range of performance and talent and takes you right back to the roots of sixties rock.
A hallmark of Some Velvet Morning is their amazing song structure no matter what tempo utilized. However, they truly stand out for their lyrics and attention to each and every detail within a song they put out for fans to enjoy. Rarely do bands pay as much attention as this band does and it shows in the diversity of tunes on the EP that also never strays from a distinctive signature sound. Their music is anything but simple even though their songs sound like they are effortless. Upon listening again and again you hear the complexity they place in their music and performance. It is their complete package and execution of writing, performing, talent and interesting use of instruments that make the band a definite one to watch and listen to. They will be making a big mark on the musical world as they may have influences in their music but they have taken those and finely tuned them to a sound that simply cannot be found right now or compared to any other band. I look forward to their next offering to enjoy yet more intricate and thoroughly superior music. In the interim buy this now and enjoy!
