HEY GUYS THIS IS SHAUNA O’DONNELL AND YOU ARE LISTENING TO MUEN TALK. I HAVE BRANDAN NARRELL OF ANCHORED ON THE PHONE.

MUEN: HI BRANDAN, THANKS FOR TALKING WITH ME.

Hey, thanks for having me.

MUEN: NO PROBLEM, ANCHORED IS A FAIRLY NEW BAND ONLY BEING AROUND A LITTLE OVER A YEAR, BUT YOU ARE NOT NEW TO THE MUSIC SCENE.  HOW DID THE BAND COME TOGETHER AND WHAT BANDS WERE YOU IN PRIOR TO THIS ONE?

I was in a band called Advent, B.G. was in Waking Season, our drummer Matt was in Bidwell, my bass player Josh was in Faktion and Joel was in Venture. B.G. and I were introduced by the singer of Splendor, Waymon Boone. Josh, Joel and I knew each other from the Dallas music scene. Matty was in a side project with the singer of Splendor. It’s a little circle that turned into one.

MUEN: WELL I’M GLAD THAT ALL OF YOU CAME TOGETHER BECAUSE THE BAND KICKS ASS. I HEAR TEXAS HAS AN AMAZING MUSIC SCENE. WHAT IS IT LIKE BEING A BAND IN TEXAS?

Thank you! Technically, we don’t even know. We’ve been touring and we’ve done one show in Dallas. We are going to do a big Texas tour when we finish up with Adler’s Appetite. We were going to right after Saliva, but then this tour came up. From past experience Dallas has some of the best musicians around. Everyone groups together and helps each other out. It is one of the few cities where you will find bands hanging other bands flyers for them. We just want to come back to our home after going and seeing the whole nation and help everyone out that we can. Hopefully, they will spread the word about us too.

MUEN: WHAT IS THE IMAGE YOU WANTED FOR THE BAND?

We are good ol boys just having a good time. We all like Nickelback where it’s clever lyrics, but true stories. We want everybody to come out and have a good time. I have daughters so there isn’t a lot of swearing, even though if you meet me in person I have the dirtiest mouth ever. We wanted to do something for everybody where you could go fishing and listen to it or go out to a club.

MUEN: YOUR DEBUT ALBUM TITLED LISTEN TO THIS IS OUT.

It is out and we have good news by the way. We are #67 on the Active Rock Charts. We debuted at #140, jumped to #98 and then went to #67 in two weeks. Thank you to everybody for requesting us. We are also #7 on the independent charts, so things are going great.

MUEN: CONGRATULATIONS! THAT IS GREAT NEWS, SO RADIO IS GOING VERY WELL FOR YOU GUYS.

So far!

MUEN: YOU PRETTY MUCH WROTE MOST OF THE ALBUM YOURSELF IN YOUR HOME STUDIO RIGHT?

Yep

MUEN: DID YOU DO ALL OF THE PRODUCTION AS WELL?

No, that was all the singer for Splendor. I wrote the album in roughly a month. I locked myself in a room. I always wanted to do an album like this because my old band was heavier like Pantera. I wanted to do a “have fun” record. It flew pretty fast.

MUEN: IN YOUR OLD BAND YOU DID MORE SCREAMING.

Yeah it was kind of like Breaking Benjamin.

MUEN: YOU ALSO HAD SOME COLLABORATION WHILE WRITING THIS RECORD AS WELL.

Yes, “Dirty in Texas” was with a great songwriter named Geoff Byrd. He’s done a lot of great things, like he is one of the only independent artists to go to #1. He and I did “Dirty in Texas” and then I worked with another great songwriter named Nash out of Montreal, Canada. We did a couple songs together and then the rest was myself and Waymon from Splendor. He and I did a song called “We Had Everything” on the album.

MUEN: THE VIDEO FOR THE SONG “DIRTY IN TEXAS” IS VERY WELL DONE. I NOTICED AT THE END IT SAID THAT IT IS TO BE CONTINUED.

Our second single is going to be “Last Night.” We are going to do a three part video. It will start off with “Dirty” and then it will pick up with “Last Night.” The last single is all being juggled. I thought that we knew what it was going to be, but now everyone is liking different things. I always liked how Michael Jackson would do theatrical type videos where it is like a movie verses a music video. We wanted to turn it into a full blown mini movie and eventually when all three are done we will release it as a DVD. It will kind of be like a Thriller type thing. It will all make sense by the third video.

MUEN: THAT IS A GREAT IDEA, I LOVE THE FIRST VIDEO.

Thank you!

MUEN: YOU ARE LEAVING FOR TOUR NEXT WEEK. YOU’LL BE ON THE ROAD WITH ADLER’S APPETITE. NOW I HEARD LAST NIGHT THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PICK UP ON THAT TOUR UNTIL THE SALT LAKE CITY SHOW.

You are on top of your game! I just found that out the day before yesterday, but basically what happened was we are going to be playing the California shows at the end. It just didn’t make sense right now to go and play the first three when we are playing them at the tail end. We are going to kick it off in Salt Lake and then go all the way across the United States. We are actually in the works of trying to set up something in my hometown of Anchorage, Alaska. We are going to try to go up there and do two nights.

MUEN: ADLER’S APPETITE IS A REALLY GREAT BAND.

Yeah, trust me, we are all stoked to say that we are going on the road with an original member of Guns N Roses, a member of Quiet Riot and Enuff Z’Nuff. They are all legends and from what we’ve heard they are all excited about working with us. They are great guys from what I heard and we are just lucky that they actually like us. They chose us and all of us took a little step back and said “Wow, they like us!” It is going to be a great tour. I’m looking forward to meeting Steve.

MUEN: YOU HAVE TOURED WITH SOME NOTABLE BANDS IN THE PAST.

Our last tour was with Saliva since October. Collectively we’ve toured with all kinds of bands. We just did Buzzfest in Houston which was 30 Seconds To Mars, Three Days Grace, Limp Bizkit, Sick Puppies which is one of my favorite bands and Seether which is my favorite band. I was standing by Shaun Morgan and it doesn’t matter where you are on the charts, when I saw him I felt like I was at a Justin Bieber concert and I was six years old. I was talking to the guitar play Troy and he was like “Man, will you just go say Hi?” I was like “I’m not worthy dude. I am not worthy at all!”

MUEN: I WOULD BE THE SAME WAY. HE IS AMAZING, THERE IS NO OTHER WORD FOR IT, SO I GET WHAT YOU MEAN.

I’m glad that we agree on that one. We agree to agree that Shaun Morgan is almost God.

MUEN: YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS COOL IS THAT HE AND I BOTH USE A “U” WHEN SPELLING OUR NAMES.

I noticed that, maybe you’ll get to hang out with him sometime. He would probably like you better than me.

MUEN: I WOULD LOVE TO HANG OUT WITH HIM, ARE YOU KIDDING? THAT WOULD BE GREAT. SO WOULD THAT BE THE SHOW THAT YOU WOULD CONSIDER TO BE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE WHILE IN THIS BAND?

Technically, my most memorable would be New York City because I’ve always wanted to play there. I have a lot of respect for firefighters and police officers. The firefighters actually brought our equipment in for us because in New York City you can’t bring a trailer or a tour bus. You have to park in Jersey. The fire department helped us out with that. You know how Texas has its own heartbeat? Well the big apple is the same way. It was a life accomplishment for me to be able to play in my band in New York. The first time I went to New York ever I went to a karaoke bar just to be able to say that I sang in New York. Not to take anything away from Buzzfest because that was amazing. We got to play in front of like 30,000 people or something like that. New York, Texas and also Grand Rapids, Michigan were the top few. Most people don’t mention it because it’s a little town, but they know how to party in Grand Rapids.

MUEN: YES, I KNOW PEOPLE THERE. I WANTED TO SAY THAT YOUR BAND IS VERY CREATIVE. YOU DO A LOT OF THINGS I HAVEN’T HEARD OF BANDS DOING, FOR INSTANCE YOUR MUSIC VIDEO IS ONE OF THEM, BUT ALSO YOU GUYS DO A TEXAS BBQ AT SOME OF THE SHOWS FOR YOUR FANS. THAT IS SO AWESOME.

I never mention this, but I’m a certified chef. I graduated from culinary school. It was my grandma’s wish and she said that if I graduated culinary school that my band would do well. The day that I graduated was the day that all this kind of took off, so she was right. I like to cook and there is nothing better than food and music. The key to a guy’s heart or a girl’s heart is through their stomach, as well as music. We like to bring the whole southern hospitality everywhere we go.

MUEN: I LOVE BARBEQUES AND I LOVE A GUY WHO CAN COOK.

Well you’ll have to come.

MUEN: ABSOLUTELY, WHAT DO YOU GRILL?

It just depends. I like doing briskets or ribs. As far as the Anchored shows, we will do briskets, ribs or chicken. Not everybody likes beef, so you might have to do chicken and salad. It’s basically like a little tailgate party. We like to meet everybody that likes our stuff or gives us a shot. Instead of handing them a pass, you hand them a steak.

MUEN: THE REASON I ASK IS, NORMALLY IF THERE IS A BARBEQUE GOING IT IS GOING TO ATTRACT A LOT OF PEOPLE SO I WAS THINKING IT MIGHT GET COSTLY. I THOUGHT MAYBE YOU JUST DID HOT DOGS.

Sometimes we will cut off little dime size pieces and say “Here you get one bite.” If there is enough people that want to do a meet and greet then we get enough for ten or fifteen people. The meat goes fast.

MUEN: YOU CAN BE LIKE COSTCO WHERE YOU CAN HAVE LITTLE BITE SIZES WITH LITTLE TOOTH PICKS IN IT.

You know what we should do is have “You kill it, we grill it!”

MUEN: THAT IS A GREAT IDEA!

Hey, you get credit for that. We are going to use your idea “You kill it, we grill it!”

MUEN: WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU ARE LISTENING TO THESE DAYS BESIDES SEETHER?

I love Deftones, Sick Puppies, Shinedown, Candlebox, the band loves Steel Panther and we are also big fans of Burn Halo. They are a great band and they are kicking some fucking ass now. Our drummer is really good friends with them. Nowadays you have to stick together and give props. I will definitely give props to Burn Halo. Obviously I love Pantera. We went down to the House of Blues and saw Steel Panther and hung out with them. They are really down to Earth dudes and they are funny as hell. They don’t really care about stardom and that’s what I love. There are a great amount of artists out there where that is what they like. That has just never been me. I’d rather talk like how we’re talking.

MUEN: DO YOU STILL HAVE THE CLOTHING LINE OUT?

Yes, we have three different ones. There is D.I.T. Clothing which is obviously Dirty in Texas. We have Cowgirl Clothing for the girls and then we are going to be doing this new one for kids called Kicking Up Dust Clothing. I’ve seen some of the stuff and it’s pretty pimp.

MUEN: I HAVE TO HAND IT TO YOU GUYS; YOU HAVE A LOT OF GREAT IDEAS.

Here very soon we are going to be launching Anchored TV. It will be on getanchored.com which is our main website. It will be like an actual TV station on the internet. We will be filming what we are doing on the bus, talking to people and all the crazy stuff we do behind the scenes.

MUEN: COOL I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THAT.

It will be fun!

MUEN: YOU CAN GET SOME OF THE OTHER BANDS YOU ARE ON TOUR WITH ON THERE TOO.

Yeah, I want to get Steven Adler on there. We will have him do Anchored TV.

MUEN: ARE YOU GOING TO DO LITTLE INTERVIEWS AND STUFF?

Yeah for sure! We video every show. We are going to be doing a big DVD as well as Anchored TV. There is a lot of stuff going on and it is all about the fans. I know that is a cliché nowadays, but to us you are talking to guys who are in their thirties. This isn’t our first rodeo and we know how hard it is to get to where we are right now, we never want to lose it, we appreciate the hell out of it and so we want to keep giving as much as we can.

MUEN: THAT IS SO AWESOME. I’D LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE INTERVIEW BRANDAN. IT WAS GREAT TALKING WITH YOU.

It was great to talk to you too. By the way, when we are in California, you better come to the show.
